Sunken truck in the Willamette River is set free
By Arrianee LeBeau KVAL NewsEUGENE, Ore - After four days a truck that was swept into the Willamette River by strong currents was pulled from underwater. The rescue took place north of Beltline Highway. This was emergency crew’s third attempt at getting the truck out of the river. “What makes this one a little more unique is the fact that the vehicle is resting on top of one of the EWEB water pipes. And so it makes it bit more delicate scenario,” said Sgt. Cliff Harrold. Lane County Search and Rescue and Eugene Fire combed the waters while Eugene Water and Electric Board watched from the shore. “I’m expecting a safe and successful extraction of the vehicle and hopefully no damage to our main,” said Jay Bozviech. Bozviech is EWEB’s Senior Engineer for the water division. He said the electric company was present for the rescue just in case the main was damaged. He said a damaged water main would have restricted water use to residents in the Santa Clara area. Divers took underwater pictures of the truck before it was pulled to the surface. The water main was not damaged. An EWEB representative said they will work on getting the water main deeper into the river so no objects can get stuck on it. |
