What does the Fourth of July Mean to you?
By Molly Blancett KVAL NewsCRESWELL, Ore. -- Thousands of people packed the small town of Creswell for the annual Fourth of July Parade. For every person there, the holiday means something very different. For the kids, it's all about one thing. "Candy," said 11-year-old Lily Beck. For their parents, it means something else. "It's freedom," said Duane Taddei. "It's being an American. It's red, white and blue." For their parents parents, there's a deep and heartfelt appreciation. 91-year-old Henry Ruark watched the parade from his front porch. "I think it's fine to see the people respond to the real spirit of what the founders meant for us," said Ruark. It's a message Ruark's generation wants to pass down. "It just means everything to me because I'm an old man and just gotta keep going," said Everett Roache. "I've got to teach these kids stuff." It seems to be working. "If the Declaration of Independence hadn't been accomplished, I would not be free right now," said Lily Beck. So while the kids chased the candy and the parents chase the kids, the American spirit was shining brightly in Creswell. |
