LINCOLN CITY, Ore. -- Just south of town, Salishan Lodge has long been a haven for golf in Oregon.

"Salishan was the original golf getaway in the state of Oregon," said Tony Pope with Salishan Resort.

Redesigned in 2004 by Peter Jacobsen, the par-71 layout is as challenging as it is diverse.

The front nine takes you away from the water and into the forest, where accurate shots are a must.

One of the highlights of the course is the par four ninth hole, which features a tricky approach shot downhill to the green.

From there the course begins a transition from the forest nine to the coastal nine.

"Our first nine goes through an old growth forest, with lots of changes in elevation," said Mark Swift, Salishan's head pro. "Then you get onto our second nine. You get out by the ocean. There's a lot of links elements to the golf course."

Some golfers have even come to Salishan and decided they had to move here.

"We went back to Las Vegas, it was 87, it was hot," said Carol Klinghammer, who now lives at Salishan, "and up here, it's just gorgeous. This is like heaven on earth."
