School superintendent resigns after prostitution arrest

MARCOLA, Ore - The Marcola Elementary School principal and Marcola School District Superintendent arrested in a prostitution sting in Springfield has resigned.

Police arrested Walter Rolla Weber during a prostitution sting in Springfield last weekend.

Residents of the community had a lot to say about the situation. "I think they ought to put him away for good," said Bruce Bingham.

Bingham is a longtime resident. Both he and his now grown children attended school in Marcola. He said he hopes the school board can find a replacement and that the community doesn't have to deal with something like this again.

"All of our schools in the state of Oregon really need to start checking teachers out. Really check them out thoroughly before they let them have the job," said Bingham.

"I had a few run-ins with him myself, so it'll be nice to get someone out here a little different than him," said Allen Stout.

Weber submitted his resignation letter by email on July 13, the Monday after he was arrested. Even though Weber hasn't been convicted of any crimes, police said he solicited sex from an undercover officer who was posing as a prostitute.

The Marcola School District will hold a special meeting Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 7p.m. Items on the agenda include Weber's letter of resignation and interim leadership plans.
