Small dogs from LA seek new homes in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. -- There is Amelia, a tiny Chihuahua.  Felix, a Jack Russell Terrier who loves treats.  And Cesar, a curious terrier mix who likes to stand on his back legs to see out windows.

They are just three of the 17 small dogs that arrived at Greenhill Humane Society early Wednesday morning, hoping for a better chance to get adopted.

The dogs came from overcrowded shelters in Southern California, where they likely would be put down if they were not adopted.  It's the third such rescue in recent months.

"They have an overabundance of animals that are basically going to be euthanized," said Denise Brittain, a spokeswoman for Greenhill.

The shelter gets lots of inquires for small dogs, but "Around here, we don't seem to take in a lot of small dogs," she said.

The dogs go up for adoption at 11 a.m. Friday.  The adoption fee is $195, which includes spay or neuter, a microchip and vaccinations.

There are several breeds.  The dogs range in age from one to four years old.
