Between five and seven people were detained after federal police entered the plane from the rear. Many of the passengers were released prior to police boarding the plane, based on live video from Azteca TV.

Once police were on board, more passengers exited the plane.

The hijackers captured the plan mid-air and held the flight from Cancun to Mexico City on the runway at the Mexico City international airport.

Mexican news media initially reported the hijackers were three Bolivian citizens who are demanding to talk with Mexican President Felipe Calderon.

New reports from Azteca TV indicate that freed passengers have conflicting stories about how many hijackers were on board. Police could be seen detaining between five and seven people.

Azteca TV reports the Boeing 737 is flight number 576.
