Do you know where the bike box is in Eugene?
EUGENE, Ore - The bike box is on High St. at the 7th St. intersection. It features a bold white stop bar and box with bold white bicycle symbols inside.
The box lets cyclists move from the left hand bike lane to a bike box in front of cars at the intersection. At a red light, cyclists are more visible to motorists by being in front of them.
When the light turns green, cyclist can then merge into the right hand bike lane.
Shane Rhodes from the Greater Eugene Area Riders (GEARS) said the main goal of the box is to prevent collisions between motorists turning right and cyclists going straight, called a ‘Right Hook’.
While the bike box has been restored to its original condition, GEARS said it still lacks the detail needed to make it more visible to motorist and cyclists.
“If this were to be brightly colored... it would show cyclist that this is where you are and that is where you need to go,” said Shane Rhodes.
