Want to spend a night in a brand new jail?
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The new Springfield Jail project is coming down the home stretch. Crews hope to have the $10 million jail largely finished by early November to begin training the staff.
If you've ever wondered what it's like to spend a night behind bars, you might get your chance. Police will invite law-abiding citizens to spend the night as inmates and help test the systems.
"One thing folks should know is we will have to do a background check on them, and some folks won't be allowed to come in," Jail Commander Capt. Richard Golden said, "but most will I'm sure."
Golden said they'll likely start booking people into the jail by Dec. 1.
The jail will house up to 100 inmates. Springfield residents passed a bond measure about 3 years ago to pay for the project. They later approved a tax levy to pay for staffing.
