SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — Police have identified a pedestrian who was killed at a dangerous intersection in Springfield.

Police say 49-year-old Harold Leroy Singleton was struck by a car while crossing Main Street late Saturday.

At least eight pedestrians have been killed and 40 injured on Main Street in the past 12 years.

The Oregon Department of Transportation announced in June that it had secured state funding for a pedestrian safety study of east Main Street. The agency says the rate of fatal and serious-injury crashes along that stretch of Main Street is 97 percent higher than the statewide average for similar roadways.

But police say Saturday's crash appears to have simply been a case of Singleton not paying attention.

No charges have been filed against the driver, 78-year-old Angelo Manuel Segarra.
