Government gives nursing home 1 out of 5 stars
By Kim Quintero KVAL NewsSOUTH EUGENE, Ore. - Anne Randles is pulling her elderly dad out of his Eugene nursing home. "It doesn't feel like they treat people like human beings or even care," said Randles.
She said the care from Avamere Rehabilitation Center on Chambers Street was not what she expected while he recovered from a debilitating fall.
So last week, when the federal government released their quarterly rankings on nursing homes across the nation, Randles was not shocked to find out Avamere rated poorly. "I would say that's pretty accurate from the experiences we've had in the last month," said Randles. Tom Hathaway, administrator with Avamere Rehabilitation Center, said the federal goverment's analysis is not accurate. In fact, annual state inspections for the past two years showed there were no deficiencies at the nursing home. "That's significant because that's a hands on, on-site visit," said Hathaway.
The rankings conducted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services - a division of the US Department of Health and Human Services - were not just based on the annual state inspections. Staffing ratios and self-reported quality measures from the past three years were also counted. The group looked at a whole laundry list of criteria: Everything from reports of mistreatment, to patient nutrition and diet, to whether or not the facilities had proper fire exits, and if anyone with a criminal background was on staff. Hathaway said the facility is safe and has enough staff to give patients quality care. "Sometimes that patient or that patient's family may have an unreasonable expectation," said Hathaway. "Sometimes it may be that we're going to make things all better and reverse the aging process." Meanwhile, Randles said her lost faith is forcing her to take care of her dad on her own. She offered this advice for families looking for a good nursing home. "Go spend a lot of time there, and try to be there as much as possible," she said. Four nursing homes in the Southern Willamette Valley ranked highly in the analysis. South Hills Rehabilitation Center in south Eugene, Marquis Care in Springfield, Corvallis Manor and Avamere Rehabilitation Center of Junction City received four out of five stars. Avamere Rehabilitation Center on Chambers received one star. |

"He wasn't able to lay on a bedpan, but he said that they forced him to at nighttime," Randles said. "They said he didn't need to get up because the staffing is a lot lower at night."
