EUGENE, Ore. -- Rep. David Wu wrote a letter to the University of Oregon regarding Eugene police use of a stun gun on a Chinese student.

Wu, who moved to the U.S. from China at age 6 and is the first Chinese-American ever elected to the House, wrote "everyone in the United States -- whether they are from Chico or Chengu -- should feel secure within their own homes."

"Congressman Wu has been a dedicated supporter of human rights and civil liberties, both at home and abroad, throughout his career," Julia Krahe, the congressman's communications director, told KVAL News.

In the letter to the director of International Student and Scholar Services at the UO, Wu addressed "the unfortunate 'tasing' incident of late October involving two Chinese students at the University of Oregon.'

The incident actually took place in Sept. 22 but didn't come to the public's attention until later October.

Officer Jud Warden of the Eugene Police Department used a Taser to shock one of the students after the officer says he fell to the floor during a confrontation in the student's apartment. The officers were there after the property manager mistakenly took the students for trespassers. Another property manager had rented the apartment to the students hours earlier.

"Please know that I share your interest in a fair and transparent outcome which reflects our nation's broad-based commitment to the preservation of civil liberties," Wu wrote.

The incident is under investigaton by the Eugene police department and the city's police auditor.

Wu represents Oregon's first district, which includes the western part of the Portland metropolitan area as well as the cities and rural portions of counties in northwest Oregon. He is a member of the Congressional-Executive Committee on China and sits on the House Education and Labor Committee.

Eugene is part of Oregon's fourth congressional district, represented by Rep. Peter DeFazio, a Springfield Democrat.
