OSU pet surgeries

By Joe Raineri

Oregon State University veterinary students are getting some first hand experience performing surgeries on animals.

Both the animals and the students are benefiting from the program.

Angel and Chrissy are two dogs recovering from surgery, what may surprise you is students from Oregon State University's Veterinarian School performed the operations.

It's part of a program between the university and local animal shelters. In the last two years, students have treated about five hundred animals from shelters across the state.

Since last fall they have performed more than three hundred surgeries.

Already this year, some students have performed ligament surgery on five dogs, something most animal shelters cannot fund on their own.

Dogs like Angel and Chrissy aren't the only ones who benefit from the program, it helps the students who are looking for that much needed first job out of college.

If you're interested in adopting a shelter animal you can call the Heartland Humane Society in Corvallis at 541-757-9000.
