Duck cheerleader recovering from concussion

EUGENE, Ore. -- Calling the incident "disturbing," Arizona football Coach Mike Stoops apologized Monday for the injury to an Oregon cheerleader.

Katelynn Johnson suffered a concussion when she was hit in the head by one of the water bottles thrown from the stands after the Oregon-Arizona football game Saturday night.

Johnson was taken to the hospital in Tucson, where she was treated and released.

Dave Williford with the University of Oregon athletic department said Monday afternoon that Johnson returned to Eugene on Sunday. Other than recovering from the effects of a concussion, she appears to be doing OK, he said.

Stoops called Oregon athletic director Mike Bellotti to express concern for the health of a Ducks cheerleader who was hit in the head by a water bottle thrown from the grandstand on Saturday night, The Associated Press reports.

Johnson suffered a concussion as the Ducks celebrated a 44-41 double-overtime victory in Arizona Stadium.

Speaking at his weekly campus news conference on Monday, Stoops called the incident "disturbing."

"When you think about that, you can seriously hurt somebody, kill somebody actually, throwing something like that from the stands," Stoops said. "That's concerning and it's unfortunate and it's something we'll continue to look at security-wise, I'm sure."

Stoops said he told Bellotti "how sorry and unfortunate that was, and glad to hear that she was released from the hospital."
