EUGENE, Ore. -- Friends and family gathered Sunday to celebrate Ted "Papa Soul" Lee's life. They held a memorial service at the McDonald Theatre and then a vigil at the park behind Papa's Soul Food Kitchen.

"He was about soul for sure," said friend Elliot Martinez.

The group said that it will have plenty of ways to continue to get everyone together to commemorate his life.

"He was all about getting together," said James Westfall. "And it naturally progresses to music."

Papa had been in Eugene on and off for nine years. He opened Papa's Soul Food Kitchen in 2006. He also recently opened Brown Betty's restaurant with his wife.

"I'm really disappointed that my friend Ted took off," Westfall said. "He will live on in all of us."
