Police say man with badge pulled car over off Hwy. 99E
AURORA, Ore. – In the darkness of Saturday night, a police-style Dodge Charger pulled over a man's car near Highway 99E and Aurora's 1st Street NE, south of Wilsonville.
The man inside the Charger got out, ask for and and reviewed the 21-year-old driver's license, registration and insurance, returned the documents and got back into his car.
Aurora police now say this may not have been a police officer at all, and they are asking drivers to report similar sightings.
They say the man making the stop was white, 5-feet-11-inches tall and about 200 pounds wearing a "dark-colored uniform shirt with no patches and a badge." They say he was driving a dark blue or black Dodge Charger with no markings and black rims.
"We have checked with the surrounding agencies and this was not one of their officers," reports an Aurora Police release.
We're told it was the victim questioning the "impersonator" that may have caused him to return the identification and leave. We're also told that real police cruisers will have blue internal lights near the passenger-side visor and the dash.
Those with similar sightings or additional information are asked to call Officer Scott Reilly at (503) 678-1284, extension 53.
An Aurora police spokesperson said, at this time, there is "no reason" to believe this case is connected to the case involving a registered sex offender late Thursday night. That man, identified by Portland police as Paul Winklebleck, is said to have impersonated a police officer to kidnap two women leaving a concert at Portland's Roseland Theatre.
NOTE: An earlier report errantly identified the victim as a woman.
