World War II-era plane crashes, kills 2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- Two people are dead after a plane crashed near Highway 58 west of Bakersfield.

The World War II-era single-engine aircraft broke into pieces and caught on fire after crashing in a remote area, according to the Kern County Fire Department. The only nearby business is a Frito-Lay plant.

The names of the people who died are unknown, but Federal Aviation Administration records show the AT-6F plane from 1945 is registered to Alfred Goss of Bakersfield.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The photos below show Goss competing during the 2009 National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nev. The photos were taken by Allen Hess and are courtesy of National Championship Air Races.
