TACOMA, Wash. -- A surveillance camera caught a true cookie monster stealing hundreds of dollars from a Girl Scout.

It's a heartless crime that's made national headlines, and Tacoma police hope the surveillance video can crack the cookie case.

The footage shows Girl Scout Beverly Reed standing behind a table alongside her mother outside a Safeway store in Tacoma.

A man dressed in a blue-hooded shirt and gray cap is seen running up to Reed, grabbing hundreds of dollars and taking off, leaving behind a heart-broken girl .

"I've been doing this for 10 years, and that's never happened to me," Reed told KOMO News last week. "And that's the last weekend of cookies and someone just steals form me and that's very upsetting."

Reed said the thief watched her for some time, waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike.

He finally made his move as the rain began coming down and Reed began packing up her cookies. As she bent over, the cookie bandit snatched the $465 in cash. Reed yelled, but the thief got away.

"It's a very tragic experience for me," she said.

Reed called 911 on her cell phone and running into Safeway to get help.

Since the robbery, Reed has received donations that cover the loss and the girl scouts received an extra thousand dollars from people who have heard about her story.

She has a message for the crook: "I can't believe you did that. It's very rude."

Anyone with information on the case is urged to contact police immediately.
