Autzen concessions have Northwest taste
AUTZEN STADIUM - In just weeks, Autzen stadium will be packed with thousands of football fans, bringing not just team spirit but a big appetite! That's why Gameday prep starts in the kitchen.
When you think of stadium food, you might think burgers, candy, and beer; however, John Sergeant, of Autzen Stadium's Athletic Food Services, says at Autzen they create one of the better menus in college football.
This season, fans can expect some changes that Sergeant says is giving the cuisine a Northwest taste.
"We changed from a garlic fry to a curly fry, we've also changed to a ciabatta bun for our barbecue sandwiches this year, and we've also added a half pound hotdog to our menu. We've changed our barbecue sauce to our very own Northwest style of sauce. It's got Marion berries and coffee in it."
About 60 thousand people come to Autzen Stadium for each game so it's hard to make all those folks happy; nevertheless, Sergeant says these changes are what's going to make it a winning season. He says, "I hope it excites them about our food and not just our football season."
13 of the 23 concession stands serve specialty foods, like carmel corn from Copper Kettel in Springfield.
"We are extremely busy this time of year," says owner John Bakken. They've sold kettel corn at Autzen more than 15 years and are pleased to see more Oregon vendors joining them on gameday. "It's not just something you can get in a mall. It's something unique to Eugene and Springfield so it's nice to see those products."
Concessions are also dropping Red Hook Ale, made in Washington, for Widmer's Drop Top Amber Ale. Folks in concessions are also looking for a fan to name the half-pound hot dog before the kickoff game on September 1st.
