Having a ball: Getting down with Disco Dodgeball

EUGENE, Ore. - More than 100 dodgeball players faced off on the courts in downtown Eugene for a night of Disco Dodgeball on Wednesday.
Fourteen teams with retro names such as Stayin' Alive, Disco Inferno and Hot Pants competed in the Disco Dodgeball Tournament at Kesey Square.
"I'm trying to relive my childhood and the traumatic experience in gym class," said Greg Gibson, a member of the dodgeball team, Disco Inferno.
The sport includes the regular rules for playing dodge ball along with some 70s disco hits blaring from the speakers and fashionable giddups worn by several on the court.
"It's my feeling that the world needs just a little more gold lamay," said Aimee Goglia, a dodgeball player part of the "Hot Pants" team.
Some dodgeball players had their own strategy out on the dodgeball court as they threw the balls from 80 to 90 mph.
"Dodging it goes so far but you've got to catch it and so we start catching it a little bit more," Goglia said.
Some spectators watching from the sidelines had quite a ball, too.
"I think these people are crazy," said Jo-Anne Flanders. "They'd qualify as Olympic athletes the way they throw the ball."
At the end of the night, participants said it is the experience on the court they remember the most.
"Just being out here with friends in the middle of the city of Eugene and being able to close down the streets and make a dodgeball court and play, 'Summer in the City' is awesome," Goglia said.
"You can't pass up Disco Dodgeball," Gibson said.
The winning team received $200 that will be donated to a charity of their choice.
