Key Oregon lawmakers tepid on gun-control prospects

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon legislative leaders are so far taking a dim view on the prospects for gun-control legislation this year.
Democratic House Speaker Tina Kotek says she hasn't seen a specific proposal that's likely to have enough support to pass the Legislature, but she says it's impossible to predict what will happen.
Republican leaders in the House and Senate say they're not interested in strict gun restrictions like the sweeping limits enacted this week in New York.
The leaders spoke Tuesday to reporters and newspaper editors in a meeting at the Capitol organized by The Associated Press.
Gov. John Kitzhaber says he supports banning guns in schools and sees no reason not to restrict access to assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines.

It's time to enact tougher gun laws. Â The status quo isn't working. Â Too many people are dying. Â Shootings have increased in Eugene area for at least the fourth year in a row.
@Baldr Odinson Do you think honestly think that just because you enact a law the criminals will say oh I can't do that its against the law? What kind of common sense does that make? How about we enforce the laws we already have and mandate mandatory stiff sentences for using a gun to commit a crime and make it where they can not plea down to a simple assault when a gun is used. Then the time given has to be served with no parole or any other type of early release. Lets put the blame where it belongs, on the person not the gun as the gun is only a tool.
@Baldr Odinson I'd be more concerned about all the drunk driving going on. THAT makes the news once a week and people are getting killed monthly.Â
Â
And why we can't get a funded jail.Â
Â
We don't need more laws when we can't even lock people up.Â
Â
Baldr is creating his own yellow journalism again. Â LETS STICK WITH FACTS..
Â
City of Eugene Data on Murders is as followsÂ
Â

Â

2000-2

Â
WELL, WE SEE our commentor is FULL OF IT. Â He knows nothing except that which he makes up. Â We don't need any more gun laws, that is obvious.Â
@Baldr Odinson Blah, blah, blah, no.
Kitzabers going by-by next election.
God I hope so. The man is part of the problem not part of the solution
Kitzhaber... why did we re elect him? Â Liberal. (i guess that says it all)
Â
We don't need any more laws. Â
Â
See my previous posts so I don't have to rehash the same crap dozens of times.Â
Â
The funny thing is... Obama's kid's school has no less that two dozen armed guards and secret service. Â
Â
If he wants to ban guns, then drop yours first, sir. Â (two faced )
Ban assault weapons and high capacity magazines. Â You still have children and teachers unprotected at school. Â The ban would accomplish nothing. You could still just walk on campus and start shooting. They need protection. Not gun free zone signs.
@givupongod maybe you could move to North Korea.  I think they are ready for your progressive thinking.  Heck China still might want you back.Â
Shrink public law enforcement AND impose possible restrictions on firearms? Seriously? Good luck with that. ;)
here in lane county we all need guns the way the police are letting criminals barely get warm before shoving them out the door, soon they will be breaking into houses to get warm
@censoredirawoody "Soon"? Haven't you seen "Occupy" in Eugene and Portland do just that?
Once again, Kitzhaber wants to impose his will against.."We the People"
