Man killed by train
EUGENE, Ore. - A man died after being hit by an eastbound freight train Monday afternoon in an apparent suicide.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. Police are at the scene investigating the fatality.
The collision happened near Washington and 3rd streets in Eugene.
Witnesses reported seeing a man who appeared to be in his 50s get down on the tracks and wait for the train.
Isn't this the third suicide by train this year in Eugene? Maybe the state of Oregon could promote and tax suicide by train tourism.
Please be respectful. I know Tom. That man would make you smile and give his shirt off his back to anyone. He had a rough life. That does not mean he does not deserve respect. He is my friend and he treated me as I treated him. Friends. I know he is in a better place now. For those that say he is selfish. You didn't know him. Don't judge someones life when you never shook his hand. Be respectful to those of his family and friends who are reading the negative comments you are posting here. He was loved. Just like anyone else in this world. God rest your soul Tom. We love you.
Youâve heard them many times, statements about suicide being âa sin,â âa crime,â âan act of self-murder,â etc. Well, let me address one more ignorant statement â that suicide is a âselfishâ act.
WRONG.
Suicide is a desperate act by someone who is in intense pain and wants their pain to stop. That is a HUMAN response to extreme pain, not a selfish one. And over 90 percent of the people who die by suicide have a mental illness at the time of their death, so they are not thinking clearly.
Saying that a person who had severe clinical depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or a similar illness was engaging in an act of selfishness when they died by suicide â even though their thought process, mood, and judgment were greatly affected by their mental illness â is not only inaccurate, but downright cruel, to both the suicide angel and the suicide survivors.
And those who use the word âselfishâ are merely helping perpetuate the STIGMA associated with suicide.
A suicidal action that manifests from intense, excruciating, unbearable pain associated with a serious mental illness has nothing to do with selfishness. Period.    by Kevin Caruso
RIP... YOU WILL BE MISSED BY MANY!!

@Myownopinion! thank you for what U wrote.....He was a good man....I  have loved him for many years....He lived hard & he died hard.....It is a very sad thing...that he had to go this way.......His contagious smile & outrageous personality will always be remembered by those who truly knew him.....his pain got to be too much to bear & I think he fashioned that he did not deserve to live  & it was harder to know how to change than than to continue to live with  all the guilt  from pain caused to others.  I truly believe that he got down on his knees on that track & asked for forgiveness & I for one forgive him  & I miss him.....his name was Tom....& he was a rascal but a good man....
lot of sadness here, for the person who thought there was no other way and for the people he forced to participate in his end of life choice.
@censoredirawoody I see five (5) who are basically just standing around keeping their hands warm.
Look at all that police work being done.Â

Sad that people don't think about anybody else when they do such terrible things, the train conductor, police, paramedics, and witnesses are all gonna think about this the rest of their lives..and this poor guy is gone from this world for ever. So very sad for everybody involved. R.I.P..
@PEANUT---So very true! The rest of us must muddle on through as survivors in a very terrible economy... whilst we clean up the cowardly wretch's aftermath. Some probably said he didn't have the guts. He proved them wrong. In larger cities they have hecklers that taunt the jumper to jump just to watch the poor soul splatter. Eugene is not such a city. That is why we feel awful. We are human and feel others' pain...long after. Had any of us known how bad he was suffering, we could have talked him out of it. Let's live on, and try to prevent it from happening again.Â
That is so very selfish. Go ahead and commit suicide but do it yourself, that poor train conductor will never forget that.
stupid is as stupid does sir
Poor guy, I hope he found the peace he was looking for, and I pray that his family is able to cope with their loss.Â
