OSP: Man has standoff with SWAT Team after shooting

MERLIN, Ore. -- A 68-year old man was arrested on multiple charges following an over six hour standoff with Oregon State Police SWAT and troopers early Thursday morning.
Authorities say they were called to an apartment at about 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday in the 100 block of Peach Street in Merlin, for a report of a man who had been shot.
Authorities say a man shot another man in the hand.
When troopers arrived at the apartment, the suspect involved in the shooting remained in the apartment and refused to comply with police talking to him on the phone, officials said.
The SWAT Team was called in and the as OSP spoke with him on the phone.
Authorities say that at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday, Stephen Lester Powers, 68, finally surrendered and was taken into custody.
Troopers say he was lodged in the Josephine County Jail on several charges, including second degree assault, being a felon in possession of a weapon, pointing a firearm at another, among many others.
After his arrest, OSP obtained a search warrant for the apartment. While searching for evidence, troopers say they found a possible explosive device.
OSP Hazardous Device technicians responded and determined the object was not explosive. A firearm was recovered in connection with the incident, troopers said.
they are drunks fighting over a girl
Ouch! Must have hurt more than a "high five" from Bazooka Joe. My deepest sympathy and hopes for a full recovery of the victims hand.
Look at that photo. Â He seems so proud of himself. Â Disgusting.
Another "law abiding" gun owner goes over the edge.
Everyone is a law abiding citizen... until they aren't.
@ST4 ---My ex-wife said something similiar: "He's always nice, until he is not! IÂ had all her friends fooled.
The same is always said about Nuclear power plants being so safe.
@Baldr Odinsonhere let me help you out "being a felon in possession of a weapon " a criminal with a weapon,so yeah a ban would take a weapon out of the hands of a criminal any more than the laws we already have that dont work, all you want to do is make animals like this more powerful and give us no way to defend our selves.again criminal possession
@censoredirawoody Yes, I guess I missed that.  Then it's true he wasn't a "law abiding" gun owner.
Â
I'm not an advocate of an all-out ban of all guns. Â
@Baldr Odinson @censoredirawoody--- atleast (s)he (wo)mans up to the plate when (s)he makes a mistake. And, like I always say, especially in my case, "a broken clock is always right twice a day" if nobody shoots the clock off the wall.
@Baldr Odinson Your gun agenda makes me want to kick somebody's as* . I am pretty sure this is not a law abiding produtive citizen. You never seem to amaze me with your intelligence Baldr.
@TAKEDOWN  @Baldr Prove me wrong. Quite often, if the perp has a previous record of violence, the media report will say so.
@Baldr Odinson  @TAKEDOWN Baldr he isnt a FELON with a gun unless he has been convicted of a felony so he was a felon with a gun as stated in line 15 of the article.and thusly he was not "law abiding "gun owner he could not legally own a gun he was a criminal with a gun showing criminals dont care about laws.Felons may not legally poses firearms not even for hunting
@censoredirawoody  @TAKEDOWN I don't know what your point is, "Woody".  Those charges are for this crime, not for some previous crime.  Thus my point stands.  Prior to this, he was a "law abiding" gun owner.
@Baldr Odinson  @TAKEDOWN line 15 what does it say please write it down so you will be able to read it...oh you could let your agenda go so you ignore the stuff that defeats your agenda.
@Baldr Odinson I doubt very much that he is a law abiding citizen!
Â
 @Dianne Pitt Not any more.
@Baldr Odinson @Dianne Pitt ---Chuckles! "Not any more"---good one. Baldr has a sense of humour. After a little comedy relief, the news article does state that he was a prior "felon". Alas! a gun debate over a story where no one was killed. So, we won't all get scolded so much for a perceived lack of sympathy for only a paw that got shot at or off.  But, I am sure the victim wants to slap that smug mug off his face with his good hand.Â
Look at that hair can you say rummety rummety molly pluck cow has horns and so does a buck how many fingers do I hold up. LOL!!!! Learned that from my Arkansas grandpa.
weeding out the nut jobs one at a time.Â
How did SWAT miss their taget on this one?
@dkgiovenco ---Just guessing, but this guy doesn't look a day over 60 with his flaming red hair and stash. Maybe they were hesitant to determine he actually was the guy/target informed to be just 2 years shy of 70. Nut jobs don't usually tell the truth over the phone, about who they are or who else is around the crime scene. Crazy ol' codger, probably said he had explosives too.
Looks kinda' like Hugh Hefner 50 years ago when he still had hair.
