School death threats: 'I see a severe dropping of the ball'
BANDON, Ore. -- Bandon police say some students at Ocean Crest Elementary School got death threats from another student for two months.
Authorities told KCBY News that a student had been passing death threats to other kids in notes from October to November of 2012.
Police say no official report was filed, but they were notified.
The principal of the school, Elizabeth Olive, says the student was disciplined, and school staff and police will be talking to all the kids about how serious the issue was.
One parent KCBY News spoke with is not happy about how he thinks the school handled it.
Dutch Hausler has an 8-year-old third grade student at the school, who he says got some of the notes. He says his daughter and several others received the threats on handwritten notes put in their desks, saying things like, "You're going to die," and "I'm going to kill you."
Dutch found out from his daughter this happened in late December and was shocked to learn the police had not been notified. "I was shocked, I was very shocked and I was also shocked that the police were not informed," he said. "I see a severe dropping of the ball, so to speak." He says he then went to the police and spoke at a school board meeting.
Although the school is now taking action, he says he is upset they didn't deal with it sooner. He says he thinks it may have to do with the student accused of writing the notes being the child of a school board member. "I just felt like it was swept under the rug because of this child's position, parent's position on the school board. No child should be above the law here," he said.
He's speaking out because he wants others to not be afraid to bring attention to red flags like this.
Olive says she is bringing the issue up at the next district meeting as well, but declined to do an on-camera interview.
This is a developing story, and will be updated throughout the day.
Glad to see you no matter how old you get you still wont take crap sitting down when it comes to your kiddos. GOOD JOB DAD!
I went to school in Bandon in the 80"s.(middle school) Moved there from a big city and did not fit in. After being physically attacked by the principle(PP) in his office with my mother present and on the same day having my head beet in to a wall by a Bandon police officer(AH), I came to school with a .25 in my pocket several times because it was that bad. Student billies included didn't know how scared I really was! Where most kids had the round shape of a chew can worn in to their jeans, mine showed the outline of a lock blade. That hush, hush stuff has been happening in Bandon for many years...I'm not saying taking a gun to school is O.K. in the least bit!! When alot of these shooting started to happen it made me realize how different my life would have been had I decided to defend myself from from "THE TOWN"Â
Fire the administrators... then maybe everyone else will get the point.... if they want a job.
(since that seems to be the only concern .. not the safety of the children)
I would think that this type of threat should be taken seriously. No matter how many school deaths there have been in the past decade. The student involved seems to have a sick sense of right and wrong. If the student is not helped now, who knows what will become of him and those around him.
Mrs. Olive, you don't deserve to be in charge of children. Your lack of attention is very disturbing. What? You wanted to wait for something tragic to happen and then say "oh I am so sorry". You are pathetic! I encourage you to do the right thing NOW and resign. These children are no longer safe under your watch. Parents, take a stand and get her out NOW!!
and on the other end of the spectrum you have a teacher in a different school threatening a little girl with arrest because she had a piece of paper torn in the rough shape of what might be considered a gun
Another bureaucrat (Ms. Olive) who attempts  to cover up undesirable behavior that would put him/her in an unfavorable light, and potentially others at risk. Shame on her and ALL OTHERS WHO DO THE SAME. Just do what is right: take action NOW! donât wait until there is a tragedy before you act. Contact the parents of both the offender and the victims, have a sit-down with them and talk it out. Contact the authorities. Take steps to notify ALL students,  ALL parents and ALL teachers and staff that this type of behavior is NOT ALLOWED AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
This goes for ANY BEHAVIOR THAT IS UNWANTED: bullies, sexual predation, sexual harassment, violence, etc.
The fact that you, Ms. Olive, tried to cover this up and sweep it under the rug shows to me, at least, that you do not have what it takes to guide and âgovernâ any public school, or any other office. You should be fired.
