EUGENE, Ore. - Forget the old adage about April showers and May flowers.

Unseasonably warm weather has helped push Eugene's record dry spell deeper into the calendar year.

Only 6.54 inches of rain moistened rain gauges at the airport between January 1 and May 6, making 2013 the driest year in Eugene since record keeping started in 1890.

The long-term average for the same time period is 21.16 inches of rain.

Tyree Wilde at the National Weather Service in Portland said forecasters expect rain Sunday.

Still, it could take a deluge to catch up. Take a look at the 5 driest years on record:

  1. 6.54 inches (2013)
  2. 7.87 inches (2001)
  3. 9.52 inches (1908)
  4. 9.63 inches (2005)
  5. 9.86 inches (1920)

As for the water year, which started October 1, Eugene has had 25.88 inches of rain, 14.08 inches below normal.
