PORTLAND, Ore. - A college student who got a mouthful of pepper spray during the Occupy Portland protests plans to file a lawsuit Friday against the Portland Police Bureau.
A picture of Liz Nichols, snapped by an Oregonian photographer during a chaotic anti-bank protest, quickly became an iconic image for the Occupy movement.
Nichols claims she was sprayed in the face with pepper spray while shouting at another officer who hit her in the neck with a night stick.
Nichols is facing charges for assaulting a police officer.
It's Been A Year Since It All Began
Saturday marks the one-year anniversary of the beginning of the Occupy Portland protests. Although the movement has become less visible since they took over Chapman and Lownsdale Squares and marched through downtown Portland, organizers say it still exists.
The national Occupy movement marched to mark the national anniversary of the event last month. The local chapter has not said whether they plan on doing anything on Saturday.
This is local but happening in allot of cities around the US and the WORLD. What our news channels filter out is what is truly going on and what the police are doing to "control" the situation. Yes the occupy movement is unorganized and is misleading in many ways. What I remember....how it was started and WHY.
Â
That is what everyone should remember WHY? The government bailed out crooks on wall street and made the taxpayer pay for it. Wall street banks are still making the profits but citizens who paid the bill are losing homes and worst. Don't let the mislead persons in the Occupy movement cover and dilute the reason the Occupy movement started..Wall Street privatizes it's profits and makes it debt public and our problem not theirs. It is wrong and many persons in government positions needs to be replaced in the up coming elections. Many that have blocked these white collar crooks from paying the price need to be voted out and replaced with congress, senate and representatives that work for the People not big money, big banks and big corporations.
Â
Stop it now and turn it around with YOUR VOTE. Local is so important. They are the ones that battle it out on the house floor to get legislation passed or blocked. Right now our house has committed treason towards the people of this country by putting a priority of making our POTUS a one term president putting aside why they are in office or even have a job at all.
Â
The Occupy movement is people saying...we are not going to take this any longer. Voting is the best way to show your voice - not so much standing and yelling at a police officer and maybe that is just my way of thinking. I understand the passion behind the Occupy but feel it would be much more affective in other manners that do not involved a clash with police. This country needs a change and democracy restored, it is being torn apart piece by piece.Â
Â
Bottom line the tax payers vote the people into place to represent them on a Federal Level...do your homework on candidates and use your vote on a local level as your clear voice.
Vote DeFazio keep him in and keep those that have his lead. No matter who you vote for....VOTE GOP is trying to take this right away as well to continue a movement to take this country into Austerity...which is what Europe countries are rioting about now.
Get a job, Liz.
Â
Prob going to college on tax-payer, stock-owner funded grants.
Note to Occupissers on their anniversary - Stay in your homeless shelters and take a shower.
I love that shot wonder what she was saying when the officer filled her mouth with that spray and did she learn anything
That was AWESOME!!!!!!!!
