Schools take precautions after police get report of youth with guns
SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Schools implemented heightened security measures Tuesday morning after police got a report of a youth who appeared to have two guns near Springfield High School.
Springfield Police responded to the area of 7th and Centennial after getting the report around 8:06 a.m.
While the search was ongoing, Springfield Schools implemented precautionary campus security measures at Springfield High School, Hamlin, Two Rivers, Gateway and Brattain schools and the administration building.
The juvenile was located by Jason Molony, the Springfield school resource officer.
The youth was carrying a toy air gun and a BB gun.
Officer Molony found there was no criminal intent associated with the incident, and he determined that no crime was committed.
The juvenile was counseled regarding transporting items that look alarming to others in the open.
People are right to be alarmed. Â Too many kids get their hands on the real thing. Â But even for this case, I'm glad the kid got at least that little bit of counseling. Â Realistic-looking pellet and BB guns have been used to threaten, rob, and even kill people. Â Here are 65 examples, just from this year, and just that involve children: Â http://kidshootings.blogspot.com/search/label/Pellet%20and%20BB%20Guns
