NEAR ELKTON, Ore. -- One person is dead and two were injured in a crash on Hwy 38 involving a semi and passenger car.
Just after 7:45 a.m., a call came in to Oregon State Police regarding a head-on crash about 11 miles west of Elkton.
According to Oregon State Police troopers at the scene, a Ford Focus was heading westbound with two people inside. For an unknown reason the driver, 60-year-old Lakeside resident Dixie Lynn Brown, drifted into the eastbound lane.
Troopers say the car collided nearly head on with a semi truck driven by Mark Wilson, 42.
Brown was pronounced dead at the scene.
A passenger in the car, Moses Owens, 20, of North Bend, was taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital to be treated for minor injuries. Wilson was also taken to Lower Umpqua Hospital and treated for minor injuries.
Everyone involved in the crash was wearing their seatbelt, and the airbags in the car were deployed in the crash.
ODOT crews at the scene intermittently closed the road over the course of two hours while they cleared the wreck off of the road.
Sgt. Josh Young from OSP is asking that anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call the Southern Oregon Regional Dispatch Center at 541-269-5000.
Sgt. Young also says this tragic crash should serve as a reminder for drivers. "We ask that motorists just drive with a little bit of caution, especially on the rural highways," he said. "And, that they give themselves adequate amount of time to get where they're going so they're not rushed, and just try to pay attention to what's on the road in front of them."
