Sheriff: Intruder shoots at homeowner, kills self as police move in

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- A local man is dead after the Sheriff's office says he shot at a homeowner and then killed himself as police closed in.
Deputies were called to a residence in the 5500 block of Willis Creek Road just before 12:30 a.m., for a report of a burglary in progress.
Authorities say a homeowner had come home and found a burglar inside his house. The man reported that the burglar had shot at him but missed.
As the man was on the phone with dispatchers, the intruder shot at him again.
The burglar left the house on foot as deputies and officers from the Douglas County Sheriff's office, Roseburg Police Department and Oregon State Police responded.
When officials arrived they set up a perimeter around the area.
The suspect, later identified as Jonathan Bunch, 26, was found near a barn at a nearby property by a Roseburg officer.
Authorities say Bunch fired a round, and it appeared that he shot at the officer.
The area was surrounded and the the Sheriff's office Tactical Response Team and negotiators responded to the scene.
Officials say Bunch was seen lying under a parked vehicle at the residence.
The tactical team was able to determine that Bunch was not moving, and moved in.
They discovered that Bunch was deceased, and the Deputy Medical Examiner checked the body.
Authorities say Bunch committed suicide with a handgun.
No shots were fired by law enforcement officers according to the Sheriff's office. They also say the homeowner did not fire any shots.
An examination of the homeowner's residence found that that multiple rounds had been shot by Bunch at the man.
The Sheriff's office says Bunch was a suspect in several other recent crimes in this area.
Sheriff's detectives and the Medical Examiner's office is continuing the investigation.
What is sad is this kid just may have been a very upstanding citizen if he did not fall victom to drugs. None of you know why, or what trauma he was raised with to bring him down this path of life. If you are in anyway shape or form happy about this young mans tragic end to his life, you my friends are who we need to dispose of. While all of you grew up in fine housholds with christmas every winter and santa clause, maybe he was cold alone in a room while his parents and friend partied on meth, and that is the only thing he knows??? If you wish any man DEAD, then you were kind of raised wrong to.
@Jimzy Reliable studies indicate that who we are is determined invitro, nature, and I embrace this thinking , there are many indicators that someone will not be successful, Drug abuse is obvious as is any propensity to be liberal, both effect the same part of the brain, and as the gene pool expands, Those traits that lead to success are diluted, so,  we can expect that successive generations will have fewer resilient individuals, our salvation actually resides in our sociopaths, but it will take a significant die off for those traits to come to the fore, the environment that individuals are raised in, has little impact on who they turn out to be, the impact of nuture is a myth, they are just now begining to understand the code in our genetics and they are amazed at its intelligent design.Â
@Jimzy You don't know how we were all raised... And don't give us this crap of how, its societys fault this guy had to live a life of crime.... He choose to break into someones home he wasn't forced into that home. He was in full control of the finger that was pulling the trigger shooting at the home owner and eventually his mind...  I didn't have christmas every year, I was raised by a single parent.. I got a job and still did drugs.. I even snorted a shit load of meth but I woke up one morning and said that was enough...  I never broke into someone home or stole for anyone...  I DON"T WISH ANY MAN DEAD, But if he's a drain on good people and law enforcement can't seem to catch him, well then that last deed he did was a favor to not only us but to that officer who just as easily been shot with that last bullet... Â
Â
Good shoot! Thanks Loser!
He ended his struggle for an acceptable place in society.
No more issues with addiction
No more troubles with family
No more issues with the police
The only cost now is a police report and some clean up
Saved the tax payers some grief
GOOD FOR YOU JOHNNY BUNCH!
What is he wearing in the mug shot??? Â Some kind of protective vest??
@Phil ---strait jacket for his last mugshot i presume.
it is a smock, for suicide watch
Such a tragedy. What leads a member of our society to do such a thing?Â
@Jerry Must have been the looming cuts to defense spending and the promise of a wonderful health care system... Not to mention the threat of new gun control laws, he may have realized all the potential new laws would end his career.
 @Jerry Meth
@Upset American @Jerry---I was just getting ready to give the same answer.
And with nut cases like this guy running loose we should give up our defensive fire arms? Â Happy ending to a sad story. Â At least we don't have to feed, educate, medicate, and house this guy for the next fifty years.
With LE budget cuts and revolving door jails running rampant around the nation, this ended quite well. Â One less violent criminal we'll have to worry about sharing the same streets with.
Committing suicide at such a young age is an extreme action to take merely to avoid being arrested for burglary. It seems to me that putting a bullet in your head requires a much more powerful reason. Bunch must have been guilty of more serious crimes still unknown to the police, or someone else killed him and the police are covering for that person. Sure could use some more information.
He missed everything he shot at, I suspect that his death was accidental, If he would have intentionally tried to shoot himself, he would have missed. Seen this a lot in Africa, they thought it was the noise that killed, they would spin their rifles like batons, shooting the guys next to them, when it was a bolt action was not so much a problem, when they got the semiautos, it was a riot, we could hardly shoot them for the laughing.
@Fancy Jack ---always wanted to ask this. If you shoot yourself in the head, would you hear it before the bullet blew your head off. I already know that you won't remember it. I figured that out all by myself. Was just curious if that would be the last thing ever heard....aside from a woman bitching at me.
More info needed. Is he a previously charged felon? Where did he get a gun? Why wasn't fire returned when he shot at an officer? Too bad the homeowner didn't kill him; at least he won't have a mess to clean up if he did. No sympathy for the dead POS; glad he's gone.
In my house he would have been shot multiple times by the homeowners. How can you feel safe without a gun in your home? At least it all ended well.
If all the thieves would do the same, the world would be a much safer place.
"As the man was on the phone with dispatchers, the intruder shot at him again." Yet another example of how when seconds count "law enforcement" is minutes away. Thankfully the homeowner was not physically harmed.
Lovely, another mentally ill (probably drug addled) person with a gun. Sad for his family. Please people leave meth alone- makes ya crazy and turns your brain to swiss cheese.Â
At least he had the balls to do it himself and not at the hands of a police officer..
@Jeff Knopf--- meth and sake made 16-year-old kamikaze pilots real brave too. so, I too salute his balls for not driving into a roadblock at 120 mph. he did the last honorable thing so the cops did not have to take his life. Bravo!
@Jeff Knopf Hey jeff why would you give the bad guy credit for anything he did NOT have any balls
what he could have done is got a JOB and contribute to his community not rob it!!! I'm glad the dirt bag DIED and wish the world would be rid of many more just like him.
@IAMHIGH  Thats the problem it shouldn't be  "HE COULD HAVE"    well he didn't and in reading the article LE was already looking at this guy for other thiefs...     I only give him credit for not causing a cop to shoot him.  Look at the money this guy just saved the tax payers...   Â
Â
@Robbie Rainbow @Jeff Knopf ---just do it so the blood need not splatter all over anything he was trying to steal...like the good china in your display case..
@Jeff Knopf Right; any POS I find in my house that shoots at me is gonna get a 12-guage right in the face! Good riddance.
