Teachers team up with McDonald's to raise money

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Teachers from Thurston Elementary School traded in their chalkboards for the shake machine Wednesday night.

The teachers got behind the counter at the McDonald's on Main Street to prep McFlurrys, take orders and greet customers as part of a fundraiser for the school.

Lots of students and their families showed up. The line went out the door.

"We have a wonderful community of support around Thurston. It's exciting," said Apryl Smith, a 4th-grade teacher at Thurston Elementary. "The kids love seeing us in a different setting, and it's wonderful to see families out in support of their students and our school."

The McDonald's franchise donated 30 percent of the profits to Thurston Elementary School.

Teachers said the money goes towards their "positive behavior support system," a program that finds different ways of rewarding students for their positive behavior.
