BAKER, Nev. - A quarter honoring Great Basin National Park enters circulation Thursday, the latest in the American the Beautiful series from the U.S. Mint.

Great Basin National Park is in eastern Nevada, where 5,000-year-old bristlecone pine trees stand sentry beneath snow, sun and lightning. The park includes Lehman Caves, 13,063-foot Wheeler Peak and other geological features. The lack of light pollution makes it a destination for stargazers and astronomers.

The Great Basin National Park quarter is the 18th coin the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, a 12-year initiative to honor 56 national parks and other national sites. Each year, the public will see five new national sites depicted on the reverse of the America the Beautiful Quarters. The United States Mint is issuing these quarters in the order in which the honored site was first established as a national site.
