Reports of job cuts unconfirmed

By Associated Press

CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) - Hewlett-Packard plans to eliminate another 300 to 400 jobs at its Corvallis campus.

The Gazette-Times newspaper, citing multiple anonymous sources, says managers told employees that one of three silicon wafer fabrication facilities at the Corvallis site will be closed. No timetable was offered.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company has not confirmed any job cuts. The city also has not received formal notice of impending layoffs at HP. But local economic development officials are meeting today to lay plans for assistance programs for displaced workers.

The newspaper says employees were warned last week that the cuts were coming, with managers delivering the bad news in a "coffee talk" on the Corvallis campus.

The facility slated for closure is where the basic computer chips used in inkjet printer heads are produced.

"HP's Imaging & Printing Group (IPG) is constantly looking at improving its business to better serve its customers. As part of IPG's Print 2.0 strategy -- HP's strategy to move from a printer company to a printing company -- we are aggressively looking at ways to drive growth and customer value. IPG's transformation is about improving its business to better serve its customers. As such, IPG will continue to be proactive about shifting resources to maximize its business as necessary."
