Jobs fair held for Hynix plant employees
By Tom AdamsEUGENE, Ore. - The tough reality of job layoffs for Hynix Semiconductor employees is giving way to another challenge: the search for work. A jobs fair at the plant Monday is an effort to help employees take that next step. Close to 50 employers and agencies set up shop for serious recruiting. More than 1,100 employees will lose their jobs as the Hynix plant shuts down. "We can't solve this problem on our own," Hynix corporate spokesman Bobby Lee said. "We need our community's help, and this job fair is a heart-warming gesture by our community." Hynix, the Lane Workforce Partnership and the Oregon Employment Department have joined forces on this fair. Employers say the job skills by the Hynix workforce are a good fit. "We find that a lot of semiconductor companies are really providing the core skill sets we need as the market turns toward solar," said Bryan Fix, the human resources director for SolarWorld. The Hillsboro plant makes components for photovoltaic solar power systems and needs 150 additional employees. Several out of state firms even made the trip to Eugene. Cree, Inc. of North Carolina is looking for 70 people. "We're looking to take back as many good resumes as we can to pass those on to our management team and see what they want to do with them," said spokesman Josh Northington. Officials said 25 other companies couldn't be part of this Hynix fair for lack of space. Workers will have a shot at a second jobs fair later this month, set for Aug. 14. It will be held at the Lane Community College Center for Meeting and Learning. |
