Garbage in, sorted recyclables out

EUGENE - We all know about recycling, and those curbside co-mingling bins on our streets.

But did you know there's a company in West Eugene that makes machines that actually sort the trash.

In addition, thanks to a bank loan, that company is set to ramp up its shipments overseas.

You've heard the old saying, "garbage in-garbage out." In this case, it's garbage in, recyclables out--and they're sorted.

Welcome to BHS, Bulk Handling Systems.

The company designs, engineers and makes systems used to sort garbage into recyclable and non-recyclable components.

Using infrared technology and these screening machines, trash is automatically sorted in one place. That boosts the amount of stuff that can be recycled.

Vice President of Operations, Chris McGinnis, explains, "So that it requires less labor, lower operating costs and again our customers have seen the advantages provided by that."

"To the lay individual what we do here is garbage sorting machinery, but in reality what we do is we separate our customers products," states BHS Sales Manager, Rich Reardon

Thanks to a loan from Wells Fargo Bank, BHS is going to be able to ship more of its machines to Australia, France, Saudi Arabia and Great Britain.

All the new business overseas for BHS is even better news for the local labor market. Officials say they could easily double the work force in just a few years.

Not bad for a Eugene firm started 30 years ago, in which a green philosophy is definitely a guiding force, even if the talk is trash.

McGinnis tells KVAL, "All of a sudden something that was going to the garbage is now being recycled, and we find that exciting. That's something that we really are excited about."

For Chris McGinnis and the 79 other employees at Bulk Handling Systems, that really seals the deal.

The loan from Wells Fargo is just under $4-million to help expand its export business and set up more competitive trade terms.

BHS is also looking for another Eugene site to build a new plant, in anticipation of growth.
