Gem Faire 'an international marketplace'

EUGENE, Ore. - Gems, beads, crystals, minerals, jewelry, fossils and much more are on display and up for sale at the Gem Fair at the Lane County Events Center this weekend.

"It's an international marketplace," said organizer James Bliss. "We have people from all over the world - from Africa, Germany, Afghanistan - all over the United States bringing their things here."

The Faire can also be a learning experience for people who may not be too familiar with gems and minerals - or the geology of Oregon, which one interactive map explores.

"When they push it, a light comes up on the map and shows you where these minerals are located," said Jennifer Borders from Eugene Lapidary and Jewelry.

Jewelry and raw materials for jewelry are for sale individually or in bulk.

"I like to come here because they have really good prices and selections that we don't have around this area normally," said shopper Melissa Halttunem.

General admission is $7. The Faire goes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
