Local firm wins national Green Business award

EUGENE, Ore. - Hummingbird Wholesale received Green America's Green Business People and Planet Award and $5,000 thanks to a nomination from their customers.

The award honors companies for their recycling, reuse and waste reduction efforts.

Hummingbird is one of three winners in the country. The owners say they cut back waste by delivering their wholesale food products by bike, using half sheets of paper for invoices, and recycling and reusing customer containers.

In essence, living green is what their company is all about.

"Everyone's excited about it," said Julie Tilt, co-owner of Hummingbird Wholesale. "It's fun and it's interesting and beneficial, not just to our business but our whole community."

Hummingbird sells nuts, dried fruit, grains, flour, honey and other products. They only accept locally grown food and hope to encourage more farmers to go organic.

"We're striving to benefit the farmers and the consumer and the environment all at once," Tilt said.

The company plans to use the money to buy a new delivery bike.
