Police: Waitress tacked on tips at Oregon restaurant

TUALATIN, Ore. - Every time you hand over your credit card at a store or restaurant, you trust the server or cashier to use it honestly. But "On Your Side Investigator" Dan Tilkin discovered that's not been the case at one popular place in our area.
The waitress, Haley Rogers, at Famous Dave's is accused of ripping off dozens of customers, and Tualatin police wonder if there may be more customers who were ripped off, considering the waitress worked at the restaurant for a couple of years.
Police say approximately 80 customers got ripped off when Rogers rewrote their credit card slips and changed the amount of her tip.
A KATU News viewer who was a customer alerted us about what was going on and wrote that a "group of us (8) went to Famous Dave's, had bad food, bad service, etc. so the tips (3 separate checks) we left where (sic) all around 10%. Our bill was $100.91 and we tipped $10, then when it cleared our bank account the server had changed our tip to $20."
After the customer complained, Famous Dave's went through credit card receipts over a 19-day period from mid-September to early October and then reported the 80 altered receipts to police. That's about four altered receipts per day.
According to court records, Rogers spent six days in jail for another theft case.
Tilkin went to Rogers' apartment to ask her how long it’s been going on. At first, it seemed she was going to speak with him but a moment later she shut the door and never came back.
Tualatin police have only been able to reach nine of the customers whose credit card receipts were changed.
They want people who think they're victims to call them at (503) 691-4800.
Two of us had this happen at a local restaurant in the Oakway Plaza. I wonder if she was working in Eugene, too.
This happened to me twice at a local sports bar, I brought it up to the management and they said they would look into it but never returned my calls. I learned not to leave a tip on my debit card  I zero out the tip section and pay the tip with cash and haven't had a problem since.
Hate to say it, but this is one of many examples ,I only use cash, and save credit cards for emergencies.
Same thing happened to me at the Prairie Schooner in Eugene. One server in particular added and additional amount to my Visa card on several occasions. When I confronted the owner about it he just took my statement and said "I don't care about your damn card and threw it back at me".
Since I don't see where she has been found guilty, isn't this article a bit premature in stating her guilt as a fact? Not to mention, maybe it was someone in management who did the deed. In any case, management should have caught this if not in on it.
This same girl tried to scam me on Facebook, last year. Â I'm betting 'rehabilitation' won't work on this one!
this is the managers fault for not going back daily and going over the previous days sales and reportsny fool can see when someone changes one number to another and he choose to do nothin sounds like he was gettin a cut too

This happened to my wife at the "ring of fire". The slickster waitress tacked on a 20$ tip when she ran the credit card.... We had to go through the bank to have the charge nullified... Wont ever go back to the "ring of fire"... Beware.
Anytime you hand your credit card over to an unskilled worker, you are bound to be ripped off.
@Michael Michaels Just because someone is unskilled, does not mean they are dishonest.
Sad. I think we'll be seeing more of this kind of stuff along with an up tick in all crime due to the economy and given how many people around here have fallen of the job rolls. And you throw in greed and a morally bankrupt society.......... this is what we can expect to see more of.
I agree with RougeCoyote, this type of crime will continue if our economy doesn't change and Obama is voted back in again!
@RougeCoyote Kudos for keeping it non-political and factual Rouge and ignore those on both sides of the fence who are using the acts of a thief to promote their favorite candidate. I worked in the food service industry for more than a decade and this exact thing was going on even when the economy was fantastic. A thief is a thief, no matter what the climate. To protect yourself as much as possible, don't leave the second credit card slip behind. It makes it easier for the server to rip you off.Â
I agree, i've worked in the food industry as a server for over 9 years and I would NEVER have done such a thing, regardless of my personal money problems, bad tips I might have recieved, or any other excuses someone can come up with. Thiefs are thiefs. Obviously this thief is not smart because this situation is easily recognized and traced to the person who is doing the wrong. She thought she had money problems before, but what will happen because no one will hire her now...
@RougeCoyote  As long as we re-elect Obama we'll get our economy back as it was in the Clinton years. If Romney is elected i'm afraid your prophecy will come to pass.
@Dikweed 2/3rds of all the "jobs" created under obama went to imagrants....Illegal and those dang work visas... thats treason in my book. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/oct/31/two-thirds-of-jobs-go-to-immigrants/
You mean it is not OK to transfer wealth? TIC
@souptonuts Only if your in Congress...
Greed.
