Now that summer's back, we can get back into the shorts and swimsuits again.

For some folks, that means getting out the razor to remove unsightly body hair. But can you get better results with a crystal buffing pad?

According to the commercial, the pads are covered with "superfine crystals that buff away unwanted hair, leaving your skin so soft and incredibly smooth!"

The people in the commercial are amazed and delighted. But what about everyday people like Melissa Guidry, who'd like a simple hair removal solution for traveling? Or Michael Spangler, who shaves his chest every other day?

Spangler tested a pad on his chest hairs with mixed results.

"I think it's taken care of some of the smaller hairs, but like, the hairs that are just like, a little bit longer, it doesn't quite hit," he said.

Guidry was impressed with the initial results using the Smooth Away on her leg.

"Oh, it did work, yeah! That's great!" she said.

But her enthusiasm was short-lived. She kept the smooth away and used it for a week. After seven days, she decided to go back to her razor.

"It works if the spot, you know, if the hair is a certain length, and then anything over that - it just doesn't work," she said.

"Sad." said Guidry, looking at the Smooth Away pad "I wanted you to work, Smooth Away! "

People either love or hate this one.

You can find Smooth Away for under $10, so it's fairly inexpensive. But the consistent complaint is that the effectiveness is very limited to fine hair that's not very long. Some users also complain of skin irritation and unsightly stubble that still needs a razor, wax or cream to remove.
