Traffic ticket? It's not the fine that will cost you
We're all in a rush. But you might want to think twice before you decide to break the speed limit or do something else illegal.

Moving violations can be costly, and it's not just the fine. It's what could happen to your auto insurance premiums.

A survey of more than 32,000 auto insurance policies sold in 2010 through Insurance.com found that premiums jumped 18 percent after only one moving violation. They skyrocketed 53 percent after three violations, compared to rates for drivers with no violations.

Let's convert that to yearly payments: drivers with no violations pay on average $1,100 a year for car insurance. By contrast, drivers with three violations pay $1,700.

Speeding tickets aren't the only violation that will hit you in the pocketbook. Insurance.com says tickets for driving under the influence, reckless driving, running a stop sign, making an unsafe U-turn and having an unrestrained child can also be costly.
