Sugar-loaded foods not always obvious
Soda, candy and cookies are all loaded with sugar. But even if you don't buy a lot of this stuff, you could still be eating too much sugar.
"A high intake of sugar comes with some serious health risks," says Jamie Hirsh, an editor at Consumer Reports Health. "The American Heart Association says it increases the risk of high blood pressure and high triglyceride levels."
So how much sugar is too much?
"You want to try to keep the added sugar to no more than six teaspoons a day for women and nine teaspoons for men, but that can be easier said than done."
That's because some things that don't seem sweet have a lot of sugar. For example, a half cup of Prego Traditional Italian Sauce has about two and a half teaspoons of sugar.
A six-ounce container of Dannon's All-Natural Vanilla Lowfat Yogurt has more than six teaspoons or sugar. So does a half cup of Mott's Original Apple Sauce.
By the way, a teaspoon of sugar is equal to about four grams of sugar.
