Vandalism plagues landlords

Carey Charles said vandalism started on his property after he evicted a tenant.

MONROE, Ore. -- First, the tenant stuck around two years longer than planned.

After an eviction, the landlords said they received threats and suffered vandalism -- but they can't prove who is doing the damage.

Now it has become a tug of war between the tenants and law enforcement.

Evictions can be messy. And in this case, threatening text messages, mounds of garbage, dirty needles, even dead animals are all part of a mess this couple wasn't prepared to clean up.

This follows the eviction of a man the landlords said was supposed to live on this property just one month.

March marked two years.

Mona Kincheloe and her fiance Carey Charles said they started an eviction process about a month ago and things have gone from bad to worse.

"The gate was cut," said Charles. "The chain was cut. His Bobcat was gone. His trailer was gone."

Who did it?

"There's no eyewitnesses," Charles said.

Kincheloe said most of these incidents happen during the night. Just recently she awoke to find the gasoline siphoned out of her fiance's car and a vandalized Virgin Mary sitting on top.

"I have faith," she said. "I believe in God. This is wrong."

So how could a person get away with all of this? The couple said law enforcement refuses to intervene.

"That is absolutely false," said Diana Simpson of the Benton County Sheriff's Office. "There are rules. There are laws that have to be followed and it appears they have an expectation we have to do something above and beyond."

Those laws include filing a multi-part eviction process which includes paying all the fees.

Meanwhile, this couple is keeping a journal detailing the damage and say until things get resolved with the tenant or with authorities, Kincheloe said.

"I don't know if I'll ever feel safe again," she said.
