Controversial video game hits store shelves
By Meghan Kalkstein
EUGENE, Ore. - "Grand Theft Auto IV" is set to release on many local video game shelves at midnight Tuesday, April 29. It's another installment in a series of controversial games, and it has a lot of people fuming.
From parents to even the mayor of New York City, many are opposing Grand Theft Auto IV because they say it's just too violent. The hype and buildup of Grand Theft Auto IV has many folks counting down to its release. "It is the buzz today," said Big City Gamin' owner Justin Ravenwood-Field. "I like that you can just grab a car from someone and drive off," said David Pelroy. Driving and shooting are parts of the web of mafia life in a metropolis that some say resembles New York City. "The story I'm hearing on this game is it's really Oscar worthy I mean it's supposed to be immense," said Ravenwood-Field. Ravenwood-Field said the story line, graphics and character development are scoring this game high marks. "10 out of 10 that's the first time since 1999 that they gave a 10 out of 10," he said. Just like Grand Theft Auto 3, the new game will actually be rated M for mature. That's for audiences that are 17 years old and over. However, the Federal Trade Commission says that nine times out of 10 parents are actually involved in buying these types of games for their kids. "I bought Grand Theft Auto games for my 10 year old son. I think hey, that's what he wants to play. He's got his grades up, so I let him do what he wants to do with it," said father Dimicoe Whitfield. Whitfield said he doesn't see a problem with the game. "I think it's a cool game the kids today are much smarter than they used to be back then, so they know how to tell the difference between reality and video games," said Whiftield. Still some parents say it's just too violent. "I like the games, but I wouldn't let my son play them," said mother Karishna Morris. Six million copies are predicted to sell in the first week. |
