More ways to save at the grocery store

By Connie Thompson

Take a close look around your local grocery store, and you may notice some subtle changes. The grocery industry is trying to increase sales, at a time when you're tightening your wallet.

Here are some tips on what to look for to get a bigger bang for your buck.

These tips go beyond making a list and clipping coupons, which is always a way to save. There's a science in getting you to fill your grocery cart. Understand the science and you'll save money.

  • Look for store brands. Some stores place them right next to national brands, but at a much lower price.
  • Look for produce outside the bag. While packaged greens cost about $3, you can buy a fresh head of lettuce for about half the price and get a greater quantity.
  • Also, look for what's in season from as close to home as possible so you avoid the added costs of transportation to get the food to market.
  • For the best prices on other items, look below or above eye level. The most expensive items are typically positioned at eye level, so they're the first items you see on the shelf. Concentrate on the perimeter and avoid walking down every aisle.

Stores tend to showcase their best deals at the end of the aisles and in perimeter departments where they put most of the things you really need.
