Will Halloween makeup make your kids sick?
By Molly BlancettSPRINGFIELD, Ore. - Most face makeup has trace amounts of lead in it. Some kits even have a warning on them. KVAL News wanted to know if that meant the makeup would make kids sick. But, parents, you can breath a sigh of relief. Doctors said cross lead off your list of Halloween worries. "I don't think they need to be too concerned about it," said Dr. Paul Benda. Though most face makeup contains small amounts of the poisonous metal, it's not enough to make your kids sick. That's because the lead is absorbed by the skin. Dr. Benda said that's not as dangerous as when it's eaten. "I think the topical exposure is not as much of a concern if orally ingested," said Dr. Benda. He said lead poisoning generally happens when kids put lead in their mouth. That's usually from paint with high amounts of lead that's peeled off walls of older homes and often over long periods of time. Dr. Benda added that it might actually be safer to have your kids wear makeup than a mask. Masks are harder to see out of so kids might have difficulty spotting cars while they are trick or treating. Target issued a statement about the face paint it sells. The company said the warning labels on its makeup are because of a California law that requires manufacturers to notify people if there are even traces of chemicals. Target uses the labels nationwide because it's more cost effective than labeling products only sold in California. But the company said the label doesn't mean a product is unsafe. |
