Looking for a job? You might be better off going to a party than checking for listings on the Internet.

Dozens of Web sites claim to have good job listings, but as many of you already know, a lot of those sites are a waste of time.
The Problem Solvers asked a top career counselors for some recommendations.

Go ahead, check the job listings on Craglists, but nationally-recognized career counselor Robin Ryan says scrutinize the companies carefully and watch out for ads that are fake.

Over the years, Ryan has tested dozens of job hunting sites. Which does she recommend?

"There's one called robinryan.greatplacejobs.com/. There's another, Ladders, for our executives in the area," she said.

Here are some job Web sites that Ryan considers to be some of the best.

Free "sweep" sites that pull in listings for various sites:

Indeed.com

SimplyHired.com

Other recommended sites:

6figures.com

CareerBuilder.com

USAJobs.com

Idealist.com

GatesFoundation.org

Craigslist (--watch for scams)

Good sites that charge a monthly fee to use:

Hound.com

TheLadders.com (for executives)

And Ryan says don't rule out local colleges and universities.

"Over 30 thousand people are employed through the University of Washington," she said.

And don't be put off by news of university layoffs.

"You know what? their fiscal year, from May through September, there willl be a lot of job openings, because they replace people," she said.

Ryan says job Web sites can be helpful, but the best source for job openings is other people. Most jobs are still found by networking.
