PORTLAND, Ore. - Amsterdam, Mexico City, Tokyo: the list of where Scott Ford has been goes on and on.

"Close to a million miles used to go worldwide. Free," he said. "Literally for free."

When Ford got fired from his job in New York, he decided to live his dream of traveling.

He did it by booking a flight, getting bumped, then taking another flight somewhere else.

"You have to ask those important questions," he said. "If you get bumped, if the flight gets cancelled, are they going to compensate you to eat?"

Couldn't he get stuck somewhere?

"That was the beauty. The airline would put me up in a hotel, so I had a place to sleep," Ford said. "I had meals provided. So it was a win-win for me."

Ford said the most challenging thing about traveling by himself: getting pictures to show he's been there. He ends up snapping a lot of his own photos.

And he found a new home: a cancelled flight brought him to Portland

"When I discovered there was a train at the airport, I'm passionate for light rain, I was sold. Took a train downtown, was put up in a hotel, and I said wow, this is like a hidden treasure. A beautiful city. I wouldn't live anywhere else."
