SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- A 7-year-old girl died Tuesday evening when she accidentally strangled herself with a jump rope.
The girl, her 5-year-old brother and two caretakers were playing at the Samantha Smith Elementary School playground just before 7 p.m. when the accident happened, according to Cindi West of the King County Sheriff's Office.
The boy told deputies his sister had been playing with the jump rope around her neck. He told her to stop, but she didn't, West said.
The boy and the two caretakers then walked away from the playground to pick berries. When they came back, they found the young girl face down on a slide with the rope wrapped tightly around her neck.
The girl was rushed to a Overlake Hospital, but she died soon after, West said.
West said the death appears to be accidental, but the county's major crimes unit will investigate.
The name of the girl who died has not been released.

They walked away from the playground to pick berries?? ... and left a 7 year old alone??? That in itself is scary! My niece sometimes tells me I worry too much about the kids, but I have to tell her it is because kids don't always understand how something is dangerous to them. Adults are supposed to watch out for them. This story makes me sad!
It sounds like the 5 year old brother had more sense than the care takers. At least he told her not to play with the rope around her neck, they left her alone and playing with it.
Tragic.  So sorry for the family. The "care" takers sure don't sound like they are the kind of people who should be monitoring children.
OMGosh I am sooo sorry. Â Rest in Paradise little one. Â
oh my gosh how horribly sad heartbreaking sad.condolences to the family
