Lane County Fair: Family fun - and a target for thieves
Be careful

EUGENE, Ore. - Thousands of families from around the region visit the Lane County Fair, leaving their cars parked - and exposed to thieves.

Based on statistical analysis, the area near the fairgrounds may experience an increase in reports of vehicle break-ins and thefts throughout fair week, the Eugene Police Department said.

"Anytime large numbers of vehicles are left unattended for extended periods of time make easy pickings for local thieves," police said.

They offered these theft prevention tips:

  • Remove all items (and any extra items such as backpacks and purses that may tempt thieves even if there are no valuables inside) from the car prior to leaving home.

  • Secure vehicles by rolling up the windows and locking doors (even on a hot day - it is better to take a few minutes to air out a hot car than to discover a theft)

  • Utilize a theft prevention device (e.g. The Club)

  • Don't leave anything in your car unattended
