Most of us spend a lot of time in the kitchen. So, no surprise that it's one of the most frequently remodeled rooms in the house.

So where do you start?

Consumer Reports Deputy Home Editor Celia Kuperschmid Lehrman says look at the layout and see if it still works for you.

"If the layout works, that's going to be less expensive. But if you have a closed-off kitchen, you probably want to try to open it up. That's actually one of the most popular things these days," Kuperschmid Lehrman says.

If you open up the room, you probably have less wall space. Where will you put the cabinets?

"One of the things people are doing is going back to having pantries, walk-in pantries. If you have the space for it, you can convert a closet into one," says Kuperschmid Lehrman.

Lehrman mentions an oversize wall cabinet with rollout shelves can do the trick. Also, a kitchen island should have room for a number of base cabinets, plus additional work surfaces.

If you buy new kitchen appliances, look for the Energy Star logo. According to a recent survey of new home buyers, the number one thing they look for is energy-efficient appliances.
