EUGENE, Ore. - It's official: Nordstrom Rack plans to open in the former Borders Books location at Oakway Center.
Construction has begun inside the nearly 32,000-square-foot store that is scheduled to open in fall 2013.
Nordstrom Rack is the off-price retail division of Nordstrom, Inc.
Nordstrom currently operates five full-line stores and four Rack stores in Oregon, including the first stand-alone Nordstrom Rack location which opened in Clackamas in 1983.
Steve Korth of the Oakway Center said that they have been waiting for a big store like Nordstrom Rack to move in for some time.
"We wanted somebody like them to be our anchor, be our catalyst here, so we had to exercise a lot of patience," said Korth.
Crews are working on expanding what used to be the Borders Books location to get the space ready for the anticipated opening on October 10.
Korth said that the new store will be a great addition to the Oakway Center shopping experience.
"Benefiting themselves but also all of our existing tenants who have weathered a year-plus of not having this space filled," said Korth.
Neighboring stores owners and Oakway Center shoppers are equally excited about having Nordstrom Rack take over the space.
"I think it's going to be a fantastic neighbor for us. It's a good complimentary business to ours," said Rick Skeie of Skeie's Jewelers.
"I'm a very big shoe girl, so that's very exciting. I'm excited that they'll be here," said Rachelle Murphy, a shopper at the center.
