EUGENE, Ore. - Normally I save food carts for our street food series during the month of July. However, when I got a call about Streets Food Cart on 6th Street near Lincoln I just knew I needed to get back on the street.
At a glance there is not much difference between it and many of the other food carts in the area. The bright red trailer conversion only presenting the guarantee of an authentic street food experience. Some simple outdoor seating and decor adds to a welcoming feel, but to say it's appearance stands out from the many other carts in Eugene may be a bit of an overstatement.
With that said, curb appeal was not what caught my attention. In fact, it wasn't even the food. Although the menu packed with comfort food favorites is sure to please the appetite of anyone needing a food related pick-me-up. I also have to say that the cinnamon roll Juston Swan made for our segment is, without question, one of the best I've ever had the pleasure of eating.
What did catch my attention is how this particular food cart offers up more than just food.
"The whole idea behind it is not just to serve good food," says Swan, "But it's to help people who have been in my kind of situation out before, and that's people who have been ... you know ... ex-offenders I guess you could say."
Swan says it can be tough for anyone looking for a job nowadays, and they simply want to help when they can. He admits they don't have a lot of positions at the cart, but they hope to become a stepping stone for as many people as they can. Teaching valuable skills, serving up good food and second chances.
